Clinical Trainee Practicum Program
Gain hands-on experience in a critical field by engaging directly with clients and professionals.
Practicum Overview
Hively is a great practicum site for Master’s in Counseling students. Trainees can see clients in person at our Oakland, San Leandro, and Pleasanton offices. We also offer online Zoom sessions through our electronic-health platform.
Here’s an outline of the Mental Health Practicum experience:
- One hour of individual supervision and two hours of group supervision are performed weekly.
- The practicum requires 20 hours a week for the duration of the student practicum. Saturday and evening clinical hours are available to help with school and work schedules. (Breakdown of weekly hours: 15 hours for clients, three for supervision, and two for notes).
- Trainees experience a cohort model with 10 – 15 students. Together, they undergo initial training and have the opportunity to provide feedback at several intervals throughout the program.
- Depending on staffing needs, trainees may be invited to apply for associate therapist positions after their practicum is complete.
Please share our Flyer with your school, department, and others interested in a mental health internship.

About Our Clients
Hively primarily works with individuals. Some couples and family clients also receive mental health services. Our clients are all ages, with about 24% being under 18 years of age and 76% being 18 years of age and up. Our clients come to us with various presenting issues and personal histories. Some of the most common presenting issues include depression, anxiety, trauma, issues with parenting, relationships, grief, loss, communication issues, anger management, and more.
Some clients have never been in therapy, and others have been in therapy most of their lives. Some of our clients are mandated to receive mental health services through Child Protective Services (CPS) and are working towards being reunified with their children. Rapport and relationship building are always the first steps in clinical work. Once there is a foundation, the deeper work can start.
