Hively is able to help Oakland families enroll their young children in a Brilliant Baby College Savings Account.

Oakland Promise Brilliant Baby helps families with young children to set the foundation for being prepared for college one day. They seed $500 college savings accounts for every eligible Oakland child. Hively can assist families with enrollment in this program.

How it works:

When a child joins Brilliant Baby, they get a special college savings account called a 529. Each child’s account starts with $500. The account is kept safe at my529, one of the best college savings companies in the country.

The money in this account can grow over time. When the child finishes high school, they can use it to help pay for college or other schooling after high school.

Does my child qualify for a Brilliant Baby College Savings Account?

Your child must meet the following requirements to be eligible:

  • Born in Alameda County
  • Currently residing in Oakland
  • Your family has or qualifies for Medi-Cal
  • Is between the ages of 0-4.5 years old

Why does Brilliant Baby exist?

Brilliant Baby helps Oakland families imagine a future that includes college for their children. Research shows kids with college savings accounts are 3x more likely to attend college and 4x more likely to graduate. Our goal is to provide this support for every eligible child ages 0–4.5 years old in Oakland.

How does Brilliant Baby support families?

We host events where families learn about child development, school options, and how to prepare children for kindergarten. Families who complete financial literacy classes receive a $250 stipend and can continue with free financial coaching.

Is my child eligible for Brilliant Baby?

Requirements:

  • Must be born Alameda County
  • Must be residing in Oakland
  • Your family has or qualifies for Medi-Cal
  • For ages 0-4.5 yrs old

How do the college savings accounts work?

Each eligible Oakland child receives a 529 college savings account with $500 to start. The account grows over time and can be used after high school to pay for college or vocational school expenses.
