“Ouch That Hurts!” Why Young Children Bite and How to Respond

July 20 @ 9:00 am - 12:00 pm

When young children are cared for in group settings, biting can happen. This typical, developmentally-appropriate, behavior can cause adults to feel angry and powerless. It causes concern and discomfort for everyone involved. The good news is that most children outgrow this behavior. The more child care providers learn about why children bite, and how to practice responsive caregiving, the better prepared they will be to stay calm and focused on reducing instances of biting in their child care setting.

By the end of this presentation, attendees will understand that biting happens for a reason, learn the warning signs that often precede biting, and develop strategies that will help reduce the occurrence of biting in their child care setting.

Learning Objectives

Attendees will:

• Identify the reasons that Toddlers bite

• Develop strategies that respond to biting appropriately and effectively

• Learn practices to put in place that help reduce the likelihood of biting taking place

• Understand the importance of promoting confidentiality when children are speaking openly about the child who bit and the child who was bitten
